This Interior Paint Color Could Lower Your Home’s Value by $18,000, According to Zillow

Before you list your house in 2026, consider a fresh coat of paint: Zillow's 2026 Paint Color Analysis found that the right shades can boost your home's offer price, while unpopular ones can drag it down—by a lot. Surprisingly, buyers' favorite colors this year go beyond plain white, with certain hues helping rooms feel larger, calmer, and easier to imagine living in.

The Paint Colors That Add to Your Home's Value in 2026

While warm whites and creams are still a safe choice for selling your home this year, choosing to play around with this year's popular colors could actually make you money. The highest-value paint color of the year, according to Zillow, is chocolate brown. Bedrooms painted in this rich shade are estimated to net an extra $2,277 in offer prices. It's a warm, luxurious color that feels both expressive and soothing, inviting buyers to relax into the space.

Sage green is another color that's still turning heads in 2026. This sweet and soft shade of green ranked the highest overall in the bathroom, according to Zillow. Turning your bathrooms into a restful, nature-inspired space with sage green is well worth it if you want to capture buyers' interest. Interestingly, sage green was the only color Zillow identified as one of the highest-value paint shades in every room of the home; in the bedroom, it can add over $1,000 to offer prices, while it adds around $500 in the living room.

Speaking of living rooms, the shade with the highest overall value in this space is pale blue. Coastal-inspired shades are tranquil yet cozy, and add an elegant look to your living space. The extra $1,723 you could make off a buyer's offer price doesn't hurt, either.

A surprising shade is taking over in the kitchen: charcoal gray wins out over other colors, though it's best to balance it out with lighter and brighter accents. This color could increase your offer prices by $1,373, according to Zillow.

The Paint Colors That Could Lose You Thousands of Dollars

One shade stands out among the rest as the absolute worst color to paint your home before selling it. Zillow says that ochre yellow could lose you a whopping $18,164 in offer price, depending on the room. That's a high price to pay for a few cans of paint.

Zillow says that it's also time to repaint your fire-hydrant red bathroom before you put your house on the market; this overwhelming color could cost you about $8,000. Sadly, pale pink is also a color that buyers don't want to see when they're touring your home. Zillow says that a pale pink bathroom could lose you up to $6,013, while a pale pink kitchen shaves an extra $4,201 off potential buyers' offers.

But it isn't about avoiding these colors altogether. “If an ochre yellow kitchen brings you joy, embrace it!” home trends expert Amanda Pendleton said. “There will be some buyers who will love your yellow kitchen as much as you do. But getting top dollar for your home is all about appealing to the most potential buyers.” Cherish your unique paint colors while you live in your home, and paint over them to boost your home's value when it's time to move.

When in Doubt, Ask for Help

While we already know that the best bet for your buyers is turning your home into a blank slate with a touch of personality, you might be wondering which colors are best for you. While shades like chocolate brown and charcoal gray are certainly safe choices per Zillow's findings, the platform also recommends talking to your realtor before you start repainting your home.

The colors that buyers prefer can vary by region—and even by neighborhood—which is why it's important to consult with a professional before you settle on a new coat of paint. They can guide you on the updates that will resonate with the most buyers.
